First-generation students need to make good use of career services

First-generation students need to make good use of career services was originally published on College Recruiter.

If first-generation college students don’t have connections from built-in networks, they should use their school’s resources. For example, Harvard University has the Harvard First Generation Program that prepares students for post-grad life. Students should also visit the career services office to learn about internships and post-grad opportunities. First-generation students need to start forming connections within their university to find job opportunities.

First-gen students can also use online resources like PathwayU, which has updated information on careers. Databases like PathwayU can also give students confidence in jobs that best fit their skills and interests. Since one major barrier for first-gen students is a lack of confidence, using online and in-person resources early and often are the key to success.
